The book  was timed for the 80th birthday of Mikhail Gorbachev and had considerable resonance in the German and Austrian media (reviews in the national publications Berliner Zeitung, Die Zeit, Der Standard and others). This interest was prompted by Gorbachev’s personality, the anniversary date and the authority of the author regarded among European political scientists to be a credible source and serious researcher of the radical changes that took place in the 1980s and 1990s.
Although this is not the first study of the phenomenon of Mikhail Gorbachev, the massive body of structured events, the careful tracing of all the main stages of the “Gorbachev era” and the analysis of Gorbachev’s actions and their consequences all offer an unusual profile of the famous statesman. His rule was marked by historical change and numerous contradictions to which Gorbachev’s reaction was also in some ways contradictory. If the author had set out to draw a bland portrait of this historic personality and reduce all his activity to a single formula he would have doomed his work to a narrow and one-sided approach.  Dalos managed to avoid these pitfalls.
